  • The many sniffs of NYC — A dog’s day out

    by David Comiskey

Barkly loves NYC! We started sniffing out the city a few months back and have been pleasantly surprised with its dog friendly attitude! To get the lay of the land, we took our beagle Schroeder out to scout the best things to do and places to go with your furry friends around town. Here is a list of Schroeder’s fall favorites!

    1. Madison Square Park – We love this bustling, artsy park between Fifth and Madison Avenue for their solid (human) food selection at Square Eats and rotating public art program. Schroeder and I made it just in time for Parktoberfest on October 5th. We loved the neighborhood food selection at the festival provided by the yummy taco joint, Tacombi, as well as others including The Little Beet, local wineries, and craft beer.
    2. In Chelsea, we had a coffee (and biscuit) and read the paper in The High Line Hotel’s beautiful and dog-friendly courtyard. (Schroeder loves the German newspaper Der Spiegel, but prefers to call it Der S‘beagle’.) Thanks to NYC’s new Dining with Dogs law, we stopped for an early dinner al fresco at Cookshop at 20th Street and 10th Ave. We can’t thank NYC enough for throwing dog lovers this bone! In the wintertime a good brunch option is The Park, on 10th Avenue, with a covered and heated garden for you and your furry best friend to enjoy.
    3. The Hudson River is probably our favorite place for a walk. Any dog lover in NYC knows that some of the city’s best dog parks are dotted along the river. Best for pampering is the sleek new Tribeca Dog Park. It was designed with the needs of humans in mind, too, so beyond the sprinklers, there are contoured park benches and all- weather umbrellas for shade
    4. In Union Square, we recommend hitting up the Greenmarket for some apple picking (rather, gathering) every day except Tuesday and Thursday. Saturdays you can find Adoptapet on the corner of 14th and University if you’re inspired to find a canine companion! Von Bar and DBA in the East Village are both dog-friendly if you’re looking for a spot to celebrate your new adoption (or even just your bushels of fresh apples — we won’t judge).

Now that we have a good feel for the city, we’re planning a ton of events throughout Manhattan to give you an opportunity to enjoy the finer parts of the city with your furchild. Join the Barkly NY Meetup group to keep up with the events we’re planning. One sure bet is to find us at the Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade on October 22 at noon! Schroeder is already getting primped for the costume contest, and we can’t wait to see how your dogs will be dressed!

Schroeder had a case of writer’s block before sitting down to write this post.
